The Mountain Coworking Alliance serves spaces and members in coworking spaces on mountains across the globe. I chat with Jasper Welch, of Durango Space, about the alliance and how the collaboration with other coworking spaces helps his own.
About Jasper Welch
Jasper Welch, 60, has been a Four Corners area resident since 1976. He married Susie Louis in 1975, and they have two adult children Corrie and Aaron. Corrie (37) earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at Colorado State University (2008), teaches College-level biology and is married to Dan Reinemer. Aaron (35) is married to Stephanie Mackley, and is employed by Raimi & Associates, a land use-planning firm in Berkley, CA. Since 1991, Mr. Welch has operated his management consulting practice, which specializes in strategic planning, organizational development and executive coaching. Educated at the University of Colorado [B.S, 1975], Jasper has received training and holds certifications in business planning, personnel assessments, quality management and local governance. From 1999 to 2011, Jasper worked at San Juan College as the director of the Enterprise Center (business incubator). He served as the President of NBIA during the 2013 & 2014 transition from Athens, OH to their new HDQ in Orlando, Florida.
Mr. Welch has worked as a small businessperson in the printing, office supplies, advertising, retail, coworking and management consulting fields. Jasper is the co-founder with Nancy Wharton of DurangoSpace. In the non-profit sector Jasper has served as a local Chamber executive and as a volunteer on local Boards. In the area of civic engagement, Jasper has been a Club 20 Board member (1985-2002, 2010-), and he received the John Vanderhoof public service award in 2003. He has served as a twice-elected Council member on the Durango, CO – City Council (1991-1999) including two one-year terms as Mayor. Mr. Welch was a member of the E>P Think Tank (economic development) in Farmington, NM (2010-2012).
In 1991, Jasper began his management-consulting firm, Four Corners Management Systems, following the sale of Basin Reproduction & Printing Co. in October 1990. After 7 years as president of the printing company (1983-1990), Mr. Welch sold the company to his key employees. Since June 1991, Jasper has been certified with Professional Dynametric Programs (PDP Works), a comprehensive personnel management system. For over 25 years, Four Corners Management Systems has provided management-consulting services to businesses, individuals, government agencies and non-profit organizations. In addition, Jasper is a certified AchieveGlobal trainer and a certified NxLevel entrepreneurial trainer. Other client work has included facilitating strategic plans, assisting in management team development and the development of the Water Information Program in southwest Colorado (1994-1999). Mr. Welch served for 10 years as an outside director with Stoneage Tools, Inc, a Board member with Fast Track Communications (2002-2010), and he has provided staff support the Durango BID (1999-2010).
Mr. Welch is a Founder Investor and mentor for SCAPE a seed accelerator in Durango, CO. He is on the Board of the Rocky Mountain Incubation Collaborative. As a member of Toastmasters International (ATM-Bronze), he is an active public speaker, facilitator, executive coach and entrepreneurial trainer, including presentations for NBIA, IEDC and regional SBDC conferences.
